2009 CURE Christopher Donalty and Kyle Coggins Memorial Award for SUDEP Research*
For Invited Investigators Only
*Established to honor the memory of Christopher Donalty (October 27, 1980 - February 21, 2002) and Kyle Coggins (December 15, 1981 - May 13, 2003), who died from Sudden Unexplained Death from Epilepsy.
Every year, it is estimated that up to 50,000 deaths occur in the United States from seizure-related causes including Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). There is an urgent need for more research to determine underlying mechanisms and causes of SUDEP so that the risk may be minimized and eventually eliminated. Accordingly, CURE announces the establishment of a targeted research program to advance the study of SUDEP.

CURE seeks novel research projects that will address the goal of the prevention of SUDEP. This program awards seed grants to researchers submitting innovative proposals that will provide new directions for SUDEP research. We specifically encourage studies that may not be currently fundable by other agencies, such as the NIH, because of their preliminary or unconventional nature. CURE encourages collaborative projects; however, non-collaborative projects will be given equal consideration. Those invited applicants who propose a collaborative project should describe how each investigator will contribute to the proposed work through details of research design and methods, including where and how the specific project will be accomplished. Labor and budget do not have to be equally distributed between investigators who choose to work collaboratively.
Eligibility: This award is available to both established and early career investigators*. International applicants are welcome. All materials must be submitted in English.
* Early career investigators are university faculty at the assistant professor level (or those who hold an equivalent position in a non-university research organization). Established investigators are university faculty at the associate professor level or above. In exceptional cases, scientists at the postdoctoral level may be eligible for this award.
Amount: Requests may be made up to $100,000 for one year.
