(for invited investigators)

Note: Applications for the Innovator Award will be de-identified before review.

REQUIRED COMPONENTS

  • Completed Cover Page (print from website and include with proposal). A completed cover page is required for each investigator.
  • Table of Contents
  • Scientific Abstract (do not exceed 500 words). Describe the proposed research for the grant reviewers.
  • Lay Abstract (do not exceed 500 words). Describe the proposed research such that a nonscientific reader can understand the goals of the project. Be certain to include how this project addresses CURE’s mission—“no seizures, no side effects.”
  • Main Body of Proposal (do not exceed 5 pages).Describe the proposed project in detail using the outline below.

Presentation of preliminary data is not required to receive this grant. However, PIs must demonstrate logical reasoning and a rationale for the work must be provided.

Innovation: Innovation should be the primary feature of the proposed study.

Proposals must describe how the new concept could create an entirely new avenue for investigation and how it is relevant to epilepsy.

Hypothesis and Rationale: State the hypothesis to be tested and rationale for the proposed research. Do not include preliminary data.

Objectives: State concisely the specific aims and research strategy of the study. Do not request funding as part of a larger study.

Research Strategy: Describe the experimental design, methods, and analyses including appropriate controls in sufficient detail for analysis. Address potential problem areas and present alternative methods and approaches.

Rationale for Model System:  Discuss the rationale for the cell culture, animal model, or human subjects you propose to use in your research project.

Impact: Provide a brief statement in non-technical terms regarding the potential impact of this work on epilepsy, including how the proposed research addresses the mission, “no seizures, no side effects”. Describe how the project will lead to an original and important contribution to the goal of advancing basic, translational, or clinical epilepsy research, and specifically how the research will lead to a better understanding of the mechanism(s) of epilepsy and will lead to a cure.

The five-page limit of the Project Narrative is inclusive of any figures, tables, graphs, photographs, diagrams, chemical structures, pictures, pictorials, cartoons, and other relevant information needed to judge the proposal.
  • Budget This should include an itemized list of how funds will be used (i.e. materials, equipment, animals, salary, fringe benefits, disposables, maintenance, travel*) as well as a budget justification. Please note that institutional overhead is not provided.  All expenses must be converted to U.S. dollars. Please use the budget form provided on CURE’s website.

*Please note that there is a travel cap of $1,500 for international applicants and $1,000 for U.S. applicants. If awarded funds, CURE encourages all grantees to attend the annual AES meeting. Additional funds outside the grant award will not be given to attend this event.
  • Bibliography (literature cited in the body of your proposal) (no page limit).
  • Letters of Support/Recommendation (required for Early Career Investigators). Submit up to three letters of support/recommendation from mentors, department heads, or essential project collaborators.
  • Facilities/Institutional Assurances (do not exceed ½ page). If an institution does not have an official assurance document, please provide in writing assurances from the department chairman or practice colleagues confirming the applicant’s time, facilities, and future position if research is funded.
  • Proof of application to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval of human studies (or international equivalent) and/or proof of application to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for approval of animal studies (or international equivalent) must accompany the application.
