CURE Epilepsy has long been leading the charge in funding research on seizure-related biomarkers and is committed to advancing this research as it will have the potential to improve outcomes for people with epilepsy by identifying, for example, who may be at risk for epilepsy after a stroke to who may be at risk for epilepsy following a brain injury to who may not respond to antiseizure medications.

Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy suffer from an increased mortality rate, with the majority of deaths being epilepsy-related and 40% due to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Impact of epilepsy surgery on mortality has been investigated since the 1970s, with increased interest in this field during the past 15?years.

The researchers identified 26 distinct areas in our DNA that appear to be involved in epilepsy. This included 19 which are specific to a particular form of epilepsy called 'genetic generalized epilepsy' (GGE).

Age at Epilepsy Diagnosis and EEG Can Help Predict Returning Seizures After Stopping Epilepsy Medicines, Study Finds

The research, by Miraç Y?ld?r?m and colleagues, investigated characteristics in children with epilepsy who had become seizure free with epilepsy medicines and who were able to come off their medicines. They wanted to find out if any characteristics could be used to predict whether the children would end up having returning seizures.
