There is little understanding of how the brain’s natural cannabinoid system (called the endocannabinoid system) changes in epilepsy. The endocannabinoid system is a signaling system in the body consisting of molecules and receptors that regulate important functions such as mood, hunger, sleep-wake, and pain. The signaling molecules that are part of this system are called endocannabinoids and play a strong role in controlling seizures. Therefore, it is important to understand how this system changes in the context of seizures and if it can provide new targets for treatment.
Using newly developed tools, Dr. Farrell’s team will study changes in endocannabinoid levels during seizures and test whether newly developed drugs can restore balanced endocannabinoid signaling.
