New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is a very serious condition defined by prolonged seizures without a clear cause. It happens suddenly in people who were healthy before. Most patients have long-term neurological and cognitive disabilities which may include drug-resistant epilepsy. The causes of post-NORSE epilepsy are poorly understood. This study aims to explore whether there are clinical signs, brain imaging markers, or certain molecules in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid that can help us predict who might develop epilepsy after NORSE. Dr. Navarro and his team also seek to understand the role of persistent changes in the immune system that may lead to post-NORSE epilepsy.Identifying markers to predict who might go on to develop epilepsy following NORSE and understanding the mechanisms that cause it could help in making effective treatment decisions to prevent post-NORSE epilepsy. In partnership with NORSE Institute.
