COVID-19 has impacted every area of life and epilepsy research is no exception. Research laboratories were shut down almost immediately, resulting in the inability to continue experiments and stoppage of long-term research projects. Researchers who could review data or publish papers began working from home just as we all did. But as weeks turned to months, the effects of the shutdown increased and concerns among the research community mounted. Now, with the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, the impact on research is only deepening.

Today on Seizing Life, we speak with Mike Coburn, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Research!America, an organization that advocates for science, discovery and innovation to achieve better health for all.  Mike discusses the immediate and potential long-term impacts of the pandemic on scientific research.  From lab shutdowns and data collection, to grant funding and salary implications, to concerns about the careers of young investigators and female scientists, we consider all aspects of the pandemic’s effect on the scientific community.  Mike also offers advice for how individuals and groups can help the research community by advocating for congressional support of epilepsy research funding.
