In July 2019, Maureen’s son Sean was diagnosed with epilepsy, Infantile Spasms specifically, at 7 months old. He underwent two rounds of intensive hormonal and steroid treatment to control his seizures in the first 6 months after his diagnosis. They learned quickly that the underlying trigger for Sean’s epilepsy is a rare genetic disease called Menkes. Sean underwent three years of copper therapy for his Menkes while continuing medications, regular blood draws, EEGs and several other prolonged hospital stays and visits to specialists to control his seizures. Sean has been seizure free for 3+ years.
While there is no cure for Menkes, Maureen’s family knows that controlling Sean’s seizures through medication and therapeutics is how he is still with us and continues to grow and thrive. They wanted to do more. They became supporters of CURE Epilepsy to help raise awareness and drive research to help other kids like Sean become seizure free – to grow and thrive. They have started “Seany’s Shuffle” as part of the CURE Epilepsy Run/Walk series to raise awareness and funding.
