Epilepsy can sometimes develop months or even years after a traumatic brain injury, and there is currently no way to stop this from happening. Dr. Moro’s research has identified an early warning sign in the brain: a protein called Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) builds up abnormally before seizures begin.
This project will test whether a treatment that lowers GFAP levels can reduce these harmful changes and help prevent epilepsy from developing or make it less severe. By focusing on this critical period before seizures start, the research could lead to a new way to prevent epilepsy after a traumatic brain injury.
