There is an urgent unmet need to identify new therapies that can cure seizures and associated cognitive decline in people with epilepsy. Dr. AmmothumKandy’s previous research found disease-associated astroglial cells in brain tissue from people with drug-resistant epilepsy. Astroglial cells are support cells in the brain that help keep neurons healthy and working properly.
In this project, she and her team will study why these cells stay in a disease state in epilepsy and look for ways to help them return to normal. Their long‑term goal is to use astroglia as a new target for treating epilepsy, with the hope of reducing both seizures and cognitive decline.
