There is an urgent unmet need to identify new therapies that can cure seizures and associated cognitive decline in people with epilepsy. Dr. AmmothumKandy’s previous research found disease-associated astroglial cells in brain tissue from people with drug-resistant epilepsy. Astroglial cells are support cells in the brain that help keep neurons healthy and working properly.
In this project, Dr. AmmothumKandy will study why these cells stay in a disease state in epilepsy and look for ways to help them return to normal. Their long‑term goal is to use astroglia as a new target for treating epilepsy, with the hope of reducing both seizures and cognitive decline.
