The Bridge to Breakthrough Award will provide critical support for targeted studies to advance Dr. Lau’s research focused on understanding how changes in brain activity lead to seizures. Importantly, this work will build the foundation needed to pursue larger-scale funding.
The proposed studies will improve brain imaging methods to monitor the activity of individual brain cells near the site of seizure onset in an animal model of epilepsy. The team will combine these methods with a new approach that uses temporary withdrawal of antiseizure medication to increase the likelihood of capturing seizures during imaging.
Ultimately, this work aims to identify the biological mechanisms that trigger seizures and guide the development of more targeted and effective therapies to improve seizure control and quality of life for people living with epilepsy.
