Drug therapies are available to treat people with epilepsy who have uncontrolled seizures. Healthcare providers prescribe epilepsy medication/seizure medication based on a number of factors, such as the patient’s seizure type, epilepsy syndrome, and age, to name a few. For most people with epilepsy, the first anti-seizure medication (ASM) they try will work for them; others may have to try multiple medications, or a combination of medication and surgery, to control their seizures.

All of the medications on this list have been approved by the FDA because they are safe and effective for the majority of people who take them. Your epilepsy treatment should always be discussed with your healthcare provider before use. Based on their judgment and knowledge, a drug may be prescribed for other epilepsy types not included in the indications.
