Researchers are working on a method to stimulate the brain using electrodes placed on the head rather than inside it. The goal is to customize treatment for patients with severe epilepsy.
Genetics
In a new report reinterpreting clinical genomic epilepsy test results, about a third of patients had variants reclassified. This led to a clinically significant change in the interpretation in a third of that cohort.
Polysomnography was effective for identifying patients with undiagnosed sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in consecutive patients with epilepsy and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) who were admitted for inpatient video-electroencephalography monitoring.
SUDEP
Low interictal HCVR may increase the risk of severe respiratory depression and SUDEP after GCS and warrants further study.
These findings indicate that autoantibodies can induce seizures in anti-NMDAR encephalitis and offer a model for testing novel therapies for refractory autoimmune seizures.
CBD, Pediatric Epilepsy
In this study, long-term add-on cannabidiol treatment had an acceptable safety profile in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and led to sustained reductions in seizures.
Subjects mostly favored "person-first" terminology ("person having epilepsy" and "person with epilepsy"), and 53.9% disapproved of the term "epileptic".
Pediatric Epilepsy
Zogenix, Inc. announced it has completed its rolling submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the FDA for FINTEPLA for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet syndrome.
